Then the Lord said to him, “What is in your hand

This is the question that the Lord is asking everyone who is seeking for some form of breakthrough today, and he is asking this question because it is what he has already placed in our hands that he is going to use to bring about that breakthrough. When he created you, he built into you that ability for the day that you would cry out to him for help. And when he comes to your help, the first point that he would have to get you to understand is the fact that he has already given you a certain measure of ability or an array of talents that can be to put to use. He would like to know if you are aware of them or not. I want you to know a couple of things about your gift today, they are equally as important as knowing that you do have a gift, and what is equally important is you knowing how to put that gift to use. Understanding these points will not only help you to understand your talents more, but it will help you to make the best use of them.

Again it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his property to them. To one he gave five talents of money, to another two talents, and to another one talent, each one according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. The man who had received the five talents went at once and put his money to work and gained five more. So also, the one with the two talents gained two more. But the man who had received the one talent went off and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master's money (Mathew 25:14-18)

There are a couple of points that I would like to point out from this parable before proceeding with this exposition. The man who shared and entrusted his property to his servants in this parable represents God, and we are the ones represented by the servants. In this parable, we see God sharing out gifts or talents to his servants. The message that we get from the sharing of these talents is that we see God empowering his servants with the ability to thrive on their own while he goes away on a trip. At what point did this exchange took place, well if you care to know the minute you made it into this world, you came equipped with everything you will ever need to have a go at life. Without the empowerment you cannot come into this world, you do not even qualify to inhabit this world. And as we can see, the talents were shared to the servants with the intention that each one of them would put it to use, each one of them was given a certain amount of talents and they were expected to put them to use with the aim that these talents will yield interests or bear fruits in return.

Now the points that I would like to draw to our attention are as follows;

  1. Each of the servants was given a portion of some talents but in varying proportion.
  2. The talents were shared out according to the ability of the individual servants to handle them.
  3. None of the servants was left out as they all received a measure of gift from their master.

The reason why I have brought this parable up is to help us to understand both the obvious and the salient messages that Jesus was trying to put across to his audience which would include both his followers at the time and those of us who are his followers today. And the message is that, God has equipped each one of us with some level of ability to enable us live and thrive here on earth.

God has endowed each one of us with some amount of unique talent that would be required to thrive while we sojourn here on earth. No one has been created without the ability to survive in this world, no one who comes into the world is without some form of creative ability, not even one and this is what the parable indeed revealed to us as we continue with this exposition.

1 Corinthians 15:55-57
“?Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
