See that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy which depends on human traditions and basic principles of this world rather than on Christ –Colossians 2:8.

As citizens of God’s kingdom the need to understand that the kingdom operates along certain principles and guidelines cannot be stated enough. What perhaps need to also be re-iterated along with this information, is the fact that these principles and precepts do not originate from the traditions of men, hence they (kingdom principles and guidelines) cannot be found in the teachings of such traditions.

As citizens of the kingdom of God we need to recognise the source of what is being taught as wisdom and philosophies that can help us to live a fruitful life. We need to indeed recognise a couple of things. The first is that we are no longer living in the kingdom that is of the world where they may have appeared to be effective in the past. We need to recognise that we belong to a new kingdom now, a kingdom that comes with it’s own righteousness, this is the kingdom of God. The wisdom for living in this new kingdom has nothing in common with what is required to thrive in the world and the source of this wisdom is not steeped in any human tradition, rather it is from God.

We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. No, we speak of God's secret wisdom, a wisdom that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. – 1 Corinthians 2:6 - 8.

Therefore, the earlier we as citizens of the kingdom understand that the kingdom principles are different in nature and operation when compared to the ones derived from human traditions the better for us all. The earlier we understand that principles or philosophies that are derived from human traditions cannot get us anywhere in the kingdom of God that we are now citizens of, the better. This is the reason they are referred to as being ‘hollow and deceptive’

You see the truth is, God’s ways are different from any known human tradition, his plans, his will and his precepts are not only different but they are superior to that of any human tradition that exists:

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. – Isaiah 55:8-9.

The scriptures clearly help us to understand this truth in order to prepare us for how things are done in the kingdom. The difference is of such that everyone that comes into the kingdom must have to be taught these precepts and principles before such beneficiaries can even begin to operate in them. And to enable them acquire the knowledge, the citizens of the kingdom are all equipped with the nature and the mind of Christ through the regeneration of their human spirit;

We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. – 1 Corinthians 2:12.

For who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct him?  But we have the mind of Christ. – 1 Corinthians 2:16.

Having been equipped with the new nature and the mind of Christ the citizens of God’s kingdom it must now be said are now placed in a better position to carry out the next instruction which Jesus gave to all of his disciples with regards to living a fruitful life in the kingdom;

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. – Mathew 6:32.

I want you to know that without the new nature and the mind of Christ in place, it would be impossible for those who want to live in the kingdom to do so.

The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. . – 1 Corinthians 2:14.

Why is this so you may ask? Well simply because they would be denied the knowledge of the righteousness that is required to live and thrive in the kingdom, the righteousness that is found in Christ and the instructions that he has given to those he called to be his disciples through the teachings of the Holy Spirit. You see the old nature traces it’s origin to man, as a result it can only relate and responds very easily to the principles that were contrived from human traditions. This is what it (old nature or flesh) was equipped to understand and relate to. The old nature with it’s dead human spirit was never in the position where it could understand the kingdom principles as taught by the spirit. How could it when it was nowhere near the kingdom or alive to the Spirit in the first place.

But what is wrong with with human tradition and the philosophies and the principles which they impart? Why are the citizens of the kingdom being told to be wary of them?  Well for anyone who intends to live in the Kingdom, they need to understand that not only are these principles different from that which operates in the kingdom, but they also need to understand the fact that Jesus did actually condemned them. He condemned by declaring them as not of God;

For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men —the washing of pitchers and cups, and many other such things you do. ”He said to them, “All too well you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition. – Mark 7:8-9.

Not only that, he also revealed to his disciples that these human traditions and the philosophies which they teach and impart, run contrary to the will of God. The truth is, anything that is against the will of God, stands in opposition to God as they transgress his commandments;

He answered and said to them, “Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition? – Mathew 15:3.

It is not uncommon today to hear and read about a number of Christians teachings which supposedly expound principles and guidelines on how to live and thrive in the kingdom. It is not uncommon to read and hear about strange doctrines which supposedly are taught in order to equip believers with everything they need to thrive in the kingdom, we as believers need to be careful to understand what the origins of these teachings are. Some of the these philosophies sound so good, they sound so righteous and so noble, once again I repeat, we need to be careful to note their origin. Could it be that these teachings sound so attractive in the first place because they originate from human traditions? Could it be that we are so easily drawn to these teachings because our flesh or old nature responds easily to them? These are the questions that we need to answer as we heap up kingdom principles and teachings for ourselves.

You may be wondering but what harm can they possibly do if they sound and look good? Good question, you see there is a reason why the scripture calls them hollow and deceptive , these are;

  1. If they are of human tradition, then in addition to the fact that they are not of God,  they are also seriously flawed and it is only a matter of time before these flaws begin to reveal themselves. A number of things are going on in the body of Christ today because godly principles are being replaced with human philosophies and ideas. A lot is going wrong in Christian homes today because sound and tested Christian family values are being replaced by hollow and deceptive philosophies that cannot trace their origin beyond the wisdom that emanated from the flawed heart of man.
  2. Many believers who have been redeemed into freedom through the saving grace that came through the cross, have managed to find themselves in another form of bondage because they have given themselves to these hollow and deceptive philosophies, some have had their faith shipwrecked because they were too careless to discern and too short sighted to see the position of the scripture on this.

  3. Also replacing sound kingdom principles for human ideologies and hollow human philosophies comes at a great price. A price which the scripture captures for us like this –

making the word of God of no effect through your tradition which you have handed down. And many such things you do.” – Mark 7:13.

Here the scripture informs us that these philosophies make void the word of God. These days it is common to hear how Christians lament about how the word of God appears not to be effective in their life situations, while ignoring the reasons behind this.

The truth is, as citizens of the kingdom we must scrutinize the principles that we chose to follow in the kingdom, we must do so in order to be sure of their origin, we must ensure that they do not originate from human traditions. But what about those tradition and philosophies that worked for me in the past? The answer boils that to this, you are in a new kingdom and you are a new person, according to the scripture, old things have passed away. You are in a new kingdom, a place where anything that is of human origin cannot inherit what is promised the , so while it might have worked in the past , the scripture is clearly saying it wont work now, because in the kingdom only the wisdom that is from God, taught and revealed through the Holy Spirit the teacher and carried out in the new nature will suffice. That is the kingdom standard.
