So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. – Romans 10:17

For many believers we have heard about faith being taught over and over by many teachers and the word as well as the message behind it would no longer be strange to us. But from time to time when this topic is revisited certain truths jump at us and they do so in order to help us get a better understanding of this precious word.

If the question is asked, how does one come to faith? Many would not hesitate to quote the scripture verse above while reaching the conclusion that faith is a gift from God, of course they would be correct. Indeed faith comes by hearing and hearing no other words of persuasion but that which comes from God. The truth is that many have been hearing the word and yet have continued to struggle to grow in their faith, why is this so? In trying to answer this question, another one arises, one which asks about  the manner of message we get from the word we are hearing from God?

We must be ready and humble enough face an unpalatable truth here, it is one which says that it is quite possible to hear these words but fail to comprehend the real message behind it. People have carried out actions in response to instructions which they heard but did not grasp fully its meaning, these abound both in he body of Christ and in the world at large today. The truth is that it is possible to hear a word and proceed with good intention to carry them out yet from a position of one who is misinformed. It is one of the errors which we are vulnerable to as a result of our mortality.

We should not be surprised therefore if I ask at this point the question- What does the word of God , the one we have heard in the course of our faith building minister to us, do we really grasp the messages behind them? What do you mean you may ask in response?

You see the reason why this question has come up has to do with what the one who was described as the father of faith Abraham did reveal in the course of his coming into faith. If Abraham is called the father of faith, then anyone trying to grow in faith must not only look up to him, but such must from time to time give themselves to the study of the life of the man Abraham. The manner of faith we are called to develop is of the type in which Abraham walked and was subsequently declared righteous. The faith of Abraham came in much the same way as the scripture chosen for this teaching revealed; his faith came by hearing the word of God. The question for us as we highlight the faith of Abraham is, what did Abraham hear about the word, what messages were conveyed to him by the words which he heard from God? How did he interpret that which was spoken to him, just how did he perceive the words he heard and the One who spoke the words to him?

1 Peter 1:18-19
“For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.”
