There we saw the giants (the descendants of Anak came from the giants); and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.” – Number 13:33.

This was the evil part of the report which ten of the twelve spies that were sent to spy the Promised Land brought back upon the completion of their assignment. They had been sent by Moses to spy out the land as part of their preparation towards gaining possession of the land. I want you to note this part, I say so because everyone that God is going to bless he gives them a peek into what that blessing holds. God does this for a number of reasons, this would unfold in the course of this teaching.

These spies came back from their mission with what can best be described as a mixed report. You see on one hand they reported that the land was indeed flowing with milk and honey, they brought back sample fruits from the land as a testimony, they indeed acknowledged that the land was as the Lord called it:

Then they told him, and said: “We went to the land where you sent us. It truly flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit.- Numbers 13:27.

In saying this they agreed that there indeed exist a land of promise and it was a desirable one. But there was another snag, and this was the basis upon which the second part of the report was formed, the scripture called this part of their report an evil report.

But the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we. And they gave the children of Israel an evil report of the land which they had spiedout, saying, “The land through which we have gone as spies is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great stature– Number 13:33.

Why was it called an ‘evil report’ you may ask? You see it was evil because it was  a report that spoke contrary to what God had declared about the land with regards to his promise to give them the land in fulfilment of the covenant he made with their fore fathers , Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. The Lord had brought them to the Land that he might give it to them. The God who keeps his covenant brought them to the land that he might fulfil his promises to Abraham to them.
