John 6:48

I am the bread of life.

The righteousness of God...

Romans 1:17 For therein is revealed a righteousness of God from faith unto faith: as it is written, But the righteous shall live by faith.

If the question is asked of many today about what does it mean to be called a righteous person? Many would not hesitate to say that a righteous man is a holy man,  one that is without fault, as a matter of fact, they would be tempted to ascribe perfection to the one. who is called righteous

But to what degree is this true? To start with, there is no man that is holy, except God,  and there is no perfection in the one called righteous even when he is deemed to be blameless before God. The truth is, it is not on the account of any good or merit that is found in the one called righteous, the truth it is God who declared him righteous, not on the account of what he has done, instead it is because of what Christ has done.

So what does it mean to be righteous, a righteous man is one who was hopelessly and irredeemably lost in sin, without the ability to save himself, but who out of the mercies of God received pardon from his sins and is given a clean slate in form of justification saying to him,  from now henceforth I see no fault in you and you have no debt of sin to account. for. Go therefore and sin no more. The scripture informed us that no one is righteous, not even one. In the light of this therefore, a righteous man was a sinner now declared righteous by the mercies of God through faith in Christ.

A righteous man is the one who in response to this wonderful act of benevolence act of God, made a committed decision through genuine act of repentance, to forgo his past ways of life, by clinging dearly onto the offer of a new beginning. He is one who from a genuine heart has made a vow to die to his old way of life while embracing the new lease of life being given to him. He recognizes his weaknesses but he has made up his mind through the new lease of life not to remain a slave to works of unrighteousness, rather he is committed to doing everything that is prescribed for him as well as avail of every help that is available to him, in order to live up to the status..A righteous man is one who has made up his mind to offer every member of his body only to works of righteousness while relying on the help made available to help him shun his past way of life. He is dead to sin but alive to righteousness.

A righteous man is one who with a clean heart, is now able to walk in the confidence of knowing that his past and its shameful deeds have been wiped clean, and there is nothing from his past that can lay hold onto his future in order to bring it under condemnation. In the light of this, he refuses and consistently strives not to allow or do anything to bring him under condemnation, he walks free of condemnation, filled with a sense of thanksgiving and a blessed assurance in the relation he now has with God through Jesus. He is not puffed up by this confidence rather he is always humbled by the knowledge of how he came into this righteousness that it was by grace. And he can with this confidence draw near the throne of God for help in time of need and trouble.

The boasting of a righteous man is not in what he has done to merit being called righteous, the truth is he has done nothing to deserve such and there is nothing he. can do to earn that status , rather his boast is in the mercy of God working through grace which made the gift available to him in spite of his shortcomings. The one declared righteous is forever grateful and eternally humbled by what. the grace of God has bequeathed to him. It is these two conditions of his heart that the spirit of God uses to guide him into the path where he is able to make any meaning of the commandment which says: "Be holy for I thy God I am holy", doing so with the sole aim of attaining to that call in Christ.

Finally men are not born righteous, rather they are made one...made righteous by the grace of God. What does it take to become righteous you ask? Not much, it starts with genuine heart that recognizes the need for the salvation of God, one that is able to take up the offer stated here:

Romans 3:21-22 But now apart from the law a righteousness of God hath been manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ unto all them that believe; for there is no distinction.
