John 6:51

I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats this bread, he will live for ever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

Knowing God through the circumstances of life.

Exodus 6:2-3 God spoke to Moses and said to him, “I am the Lord. I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty, but by my name the Lord I did not make myself known to them.
It is one thing to know a man's name, it is another thing entirely to know why a man is so called. There was a time when the name of a man tells us almost evrrything we need to know about him and how we can expect him to react to events in his life.

When I was in the University, our team's goalkeeper goes by the nickname 'Actor', we had a coach then who could never fathom out why he was so called. But eventualy he did when we went for the Wold University games and he witnessed how smooth Actor was with the ladies. He said in training one day-' Now I know why they call you actor'.

While it is true that many of us know the names by which God is addressed and as a result, not only do we address him by them, we even set out to worship him by these names. But the truth remain it is not to us all that he has revealed why he is so called. Abraham walked with God for many years, he experienced the power and the glory of God, yet the need for God to reveal himself to him as the Lord never came up, Abraham only experienced God as the Almighty.

Note what I just said about Abraham...i said that the need did not arise for Abraham to experience God as the Lord in his situation. You see everywhere he went, the presence of God in his life was acknowledged without any form of resistance. But with Moses the situation was different, standing between God's people - their freedom and the inheritance promised to their fore fathers was an earthly ruler called Pharaoh, who so far has defied God's instruction to let Israel go. In order for the Israel to come into their inheritance, the need for arose therefore, for another ruler, one mightier and more powerful than Pharaoh to cometo their aid. The need for a ruler whose glory outshines that of Pharaoh to step forward became expedient, now there was the need and opportunity for God to reveal himself as the Lord...the Lord of heaven and earth, the one who presides over the affairs of men.

You see, Abraham discovered the God who provides just as he was about to offer Isaac his son as a sacrifice, Hagar discovered the God who sees, during her loneliness and helplessness in the wilderness, David discovered the God who is a sherpherd, the One who jealously watches over his people night and day, as he faced the dangers of being in the wild all alone with his father's flocks. Peter and the rest of the Apostles discovered the God who does not show favor or partiality as they witnessed the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the gentiles. The list is endless of those who by the needs in their life came into the revealation of the names of God, they did by experiencing real reason why he goes by the names.

Note how God introduced himself to Moses-" I am the Lord",- meaning He had always gone and would always go by the name (other names as well), even though they had not experienced or known him by it. The message here is that we did not ascribe these names to God, they have always been who he is, those who described God by these names did so because of what they experienced, their condition revealed the names to them. The names on the other hand revealed his attributes, they describe who he is and what he answers to. As a result of the covenant we have with him in Christ Jesus,we should be able to put our confidence in these names because they are not cosmetic titles that we only use to reference him. Rather they describe what he does, they tell us what he sets out to do, from eternity and to eternity. And in his immutability they describe what he would always do and the way he would always react whenever the opportunity present itself in the life of his people.

Are you in trouble, he is called the Deliverer for a reason , are you suffering from any illness, trust in the God who reveals himself as the healer, are you in financial mess Jehovah Jireh remains the provider, are you weak and weary, then it is time look to the one who is the Rock and Pillar of our salvation.
My prayer is that God through Christ will seize the situation you are experiencing as an opportunity to reveal the true meaning of his name to you. Amen!
