Isaiah 55 : 1-2

Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labour on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of fare.

The word of God is a lamp unto my feet

Ezra7:10  “For Ezra had devoted himself to the study and observance of the Law of the Lord, and to teaching its decrees and laws in Israel. “

One of the characters that I really look up in the bible is the man Ezra and the reasons for this has to do with what the scripture had to say about his life in relation to the scripture. As followers of Christ, ours is to lead by example, ours is to show to the world what Christ represents, his way and life, not by words of mouth alone but by a combination of deeds and words.  And the order is very important, because we would be nothing but hypocrites if we teach others and try to instruct others about the life of Christ while deferring to the scriptures, when we have not complied or done so ourselves.

As one who leads in the Church and teaches the scripture in addition to rendering pastoral care to people, the man Ezra I have personally set up as my role model, and I use what was recorded about him to examine myself at every opportunity I have. In devoting himself to the study of the word, Ezra was not doing this from the quest for intellectual glory, rather he was doing this as a mark of obedience to the instruction that was given to Joshua by God, when he took over from Moses;

Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. – Joshua 1:8

He must have been inspired by these instructions and this is one template for anyone aspiring to become effective in their walk with God and in whatever capacity they find themselves be it to run a ministry in the body of Christ or even in their personal dealings with God. This applies to all believers and not just ministers, elders, pastors or Church leaders alone. The truth is anyone who desires to have a fruitful relationship with God through Christ, should consider this template a worthy proposal to apply as part of their faith walk.

The word, precepts, commandments, tenets  of God were not given to us to serve as intellectual exhibit, rather it was given to instruct, guide, direct, correct and empower us. These God inspired instructions for daily living were given to nurture our spirit man, to provide us with the godly wisdom that would prosper and benefit us tremendously hence the need for us to devote ourselves both to studying them with the aim of carrying them out. Our salvation through Christ has given us a new life, God having delivered us into his Kingdom through his Son Jesus, as citizens of the kingdom, devoting ourselves to the scripture, both by study and compliance remains the way to grow, mature and prosper in this new life and kingdom.

There is a reason why many do not appear to change even after many years of coming to Christ, there is a reason why many even though they can recite the scripture off head, yet the scripture does not appear to be in them or benefit them. There is a reason why their lives and what the scripture says are miles apart and there is a reason why it appears the way of faith does not prosper them; they have omitted an essential part of this model, the part which says to closely observe to do what the scripture instructs.
