Psalm 1: 2-3

Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper.

The heart of man

The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? -.Jeremiah 17:9

This timely warning is for everyone of us, you see it is easy to read this and conclude that the scripture is referring to others and not us, it is easy to come to the point where we begin to feel that the  scripture must be referring to others with unrepentant heart, if we are ever tempted to go down this road, guess what we have just become the victims yet again of that very deception which the scripture highlights here.

The truth is all humans including ourselves need to pay heed to this warning. All have sinned and come short of the glory of God and none is righteous boldly declared the scripture, none at all and this is fallen condition of all mortals . It is into this condition that all mortals were born.  It is the state of the heart of this fallen condition that is on display here that all may see and understand. After the fall in Genesis chapter 6, God examined the heart of mankind, the ones that he made in his own image, this was what he saw:,

Genesis 6:5 The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time.

As a result of the fall it had become the ground upon which the seed of sin and wickedness thrives, it had become the sit of man's rebellion against his God, he conceives, conceals, nurtures and churns out iniquities as well as wickedness from the heart. Not only is the heart able to deceive those around, even the owner is also a victim as well. So deplorable is the condition of the heart there is no cure unless as part of the redemptive package on offer through Christ. God promised to replace the rebellious heart with another.

This is where the word of God comes to our aid, both in examining the heart and purging it of the deception that resides within it. The heart that is devoid of the word of God is bound to remain prone to deception and the wickedness that comes with it. Even the best intentions can be fraught with this. It is the word of God that helps us to rise above the deception of the heart, it is his word that protects us from it's deception. The word of God is the surgical blade that we apply to filter the motives of the heart in order to separate the truth from the lies/deception. Doing this will protect us from the inherent deception and wickedness which plagues the heart of mankind (Hebrews 4:12)
